WHERE'S MOUSE?

Publisher: Kingfisher

An accordion-fold book with peek-through pages mimicking holes (e.g., in a hollow tree) through which animal characters can be seen in a three-dimensional effect. The slight story consists of the search for Baby Mouse; what distinguishes this are Baker's meticulously detailed illustrations of animals in a typical British woodland and meadow—rabbits, owl, badgers, foxes, moles. Once the folded double pages have been turned to view all of one side of the single long sheet, additional turns uncover the second side—where day gives way to night and cutaway illustrations reveal linking underground burrows leading to Baby Mouse, plus some interesting fossil remains. Though the art is realistic (if romanticized), the story is not: no one's in danger of being eaten here. A visually pleasing book that will appeal to very young children who enjoy simple books about animals. (Picture book. 2-5)
