The rollicking, perennially popular song, written in 1908- -with Jack Norworth's lyrics and the chords for the chorus included, plus ``The [two] Original Verses,'' but not the tune to go with them. Gillman sets his illustrations for the chorus in the fifth game of the 1947 World Series, when Joe DiMaggio and Phil Rizzuto played for the Yankees and Pee Wee Reese and Jackie Robinson for the Dodgers. As he explains in an extensive note, the Dodgers lost both the game and the series, the first to be televised. His realistic art is lovingly nostalgic, re-creating Brooklyn, Ebbets Field, and the historic game in all their glory- -period billboards, fans, WOR-TV, and, of course, the game with those three strikes. For baseball history buffs of all ages. (Picture book. 5+)
