Leo is the consummate truck-loving little boy. His Mama does not feel the same way, especially after finding a dump truck in her cereal and the millionth rereading of the same truck book. So, she takes Leo for a walk. Each time she queries Leo about a sight, he responds appropriately enough…it’s just that he is talking about this or that truck, while she is talking about anything but. This misunderstanding leads Leo to think that Mama’s surprise is a new toy fire truck, so he is disappointed with the huge orange cat Mama presents. But Lola, a truck-loving cat, has other ideas. While it takes Leo a while to warm up to Lola, who constantly follows him everywhere and always seems to be in the way, the two are soon inseparable, sharing their truck-centered adventures. Samuels fills her illustrations with details, the naïve, flat colors outlined delicately with fine ink lines. Leo's appealingly round-headed, and Lola has a high-power personality all her own. It’s refreshing to see a cat-as-best-friend tale, and truck-lovers will certainly get some pointers from Leo’s creative play. (Picture book. 3-8)
