THE GROWING-UP FEET

Twins Jimmy and Janet are back with another quintessential here-and-now story, this time concerning that favorite preschool drama, new shoes. Mother says it's time, but Mr. Markle, the salesman, reports that their feet haven't grown after all. Even a balloon is inadequate comfort, but Mr. Markle saves the day by producing boots that stretch with growing feet. There's been no rain, so there are no puddles; but after a night spent with the precious boots in bed, the twins find puddles, even without rain, when Daddy washes the car. Ordinary events—but Cleary catches the nuances of preschool concerns with extraordinary precision. The illustrations, relaxed and cheerful, are just right. This would be perfect for primary graders to read to younger children.
