The trail in question is the route of a boy exploring ``Summertime Island,'' where he finds a lighthouse, various creatures, ``a ghost town of shanties at the edge of the sea,'' and a derelict boat, then returns to picnic with his parents on the beach at twilight. Pinkney's handsome scratchboard illustrations depict an inquisitive, self-reliant black boy, with the medium's rather somber tones reflecting the narrative's introspective quality. Quiet, but nice.
