A PERFECT NAME

Two hippos, Mama and Papa Potamus, strive to choose just the right name for their Little One. Searching through the name book has given them lots of ideas, but the next day is their child’s naming ceremony and they haven’t decided yet. The end of the day finds Papa dreaming (and snoring) and Mama lying awake, but still no name. When Little One celebrates her naming ceremony by being the first to splash into the water, making ripples and laughter, her parents are inspired with just the right choice. Pham’s deep-hued watercolors are quite fanciful, using jungle and savanna motifs along with African textiles. The gamboling animals that gather for Little One’s naming ceremony are anthropomorphized but mostly unclothed, while Mama and Papa are distinguished by their bright clothing (and mama’s gold earrings). Made to be part of a storytime that could include Kevin Henkes’s Chrysanthemum and Yangsook Choi’s The Name Jar, and sure, as the author writes in “A Note to Parents,” to inspire queries about the source and meaning of children’s own names.
