Through the unfailingly delightful game of “peekaboo,” babies and toddlers are introduced to a series of animals in this book and its companions.
On the farm, babies can find five familiar animals: a horse, a sheep, chickens, a cow, and a dog. Each bright and cheery-colored double-page spread repeats the same text on the left-hand page: “Peek a boo! Who’s there?” The right-hand page depicts a stylized but clearly identifiable animal, with its hooves, wings, or paws covering its face. Toddlers can flip open the sturdy gatefold flap to reveal the animal in midaction: galloping, leaping, clucking, chewing, or chasing a ball. The three other books in the series—In the Jungle, In the Ocean, and In the Snow—follow the same format. Two minor quibbles: in the jungle book, one of the animals is a frog, yet frogs are not exclusive to jungles; and in the ocean book, the octopus is described as “creeping,” but the more accurate word would have been “crawling.” Regardless, little ones and their grown-up readers will have a grand time together, guessing and revealing the charmingly depicted animals behind the flaps.
Add this and its companions to the ever expanding animal board-book shelf.
