Women of the Bible offer new perspectives on their well-known stories in Biddle’s collection, which challenges some of Christianity’s most deeply held beliefs.

Constructed like a play—complete with a cast list (including God, a nonbinary figure often referred to as “The Lord God Almighty” or simply “TLGA”) and set directions (“Scenic design of the reader’s choice. God provides minimal suggestions”)—this feminist recounting of famous tales from Scripture features a different woman’s point of view in each chapter. Using modern language, Biddle reexamines familiar events from new angles. Eve, for example, laments her status as the origin of sin, and Ruth struggles with guilt over the actions of her descendant, King David. The stories touch on many relatable issues while tackling the past, as when Eve laments that her sons, Cain and Abel, were “Two little boys who grew up to become angry men.” God makes an occasional appearance, at one point washing mounds of dishes left by humanity and “scraping away mound after towering mound of rage and cruelty and violence.” Biddle doesn’t hold back in her portrayal of the women’s rightful rage and indignation. She effectively shows how each character feels the consequences of the roles in which she’s been cast, from Mrs. Lot’s questioning of the incest in Sodom and Gomorrah (“The girls are the seducers? They’re the ones who groom the old farts? They’re the ones in control?! Give me a fucking break!”) to Queen Vashti and Lottie debating choices, culpability, and womanhood. These accounts and conversations ultimately make readers consider the flaws of the traditional tales they’ve been told. Biddle’s flippant tone sometimes becomes a bit exhausting, and the work might have benefited from slightly less snark on occasion. However, the book’s unapologetic frankness is delightful.

A sharp-witted takedown of the male-centered biblical narrative and an inspiring, impassioned battle cry for sisterhood.

A novella focuses on the hidden workings of God in the lives of ordinary people.

This story by Paul and Bland opens with a seemingly incongruous sight: Two men eating their lunches on a bench in a freezing downpour. And the more readers learn about the men, the more bizarre things get. The younger-looking one is Charlie, a substitute mail carrier who was recently finishing up his route when he suddenly died. And his companion is Everett, an unconventional angel Charlie sometimes suspects may be a kind of substandard model. Charlie knows that it’s part of Everett’s purpose to “show how the mighty hand of God worked in people’s lives.” Witnessing this is a step in Charlie’s own post-death journey. As for Charlie himself, “he could feel evil and how it tried to latch on to anyone within reach”—the diametric opposite of the heaven he had experienced, a place that “pulsated with love.” This eager reaching of evil to seize everyone around it informs the meetings Charlie and Everett quickly have—with Martin, the owner of a local bike shop; Eva, a postal worker already frustrated on her first day on the job; middle-aged waitress Karen, who “went about her life without realizing she was a mighty warrior, a saint who was troubling the Enemy’s plans”; and others. With clear, inviting prose and remarkable concision, the authors draw readers into these separate lives and twine their tales together. The fantasy backstory of angels is seamlessly woven into the well-realized depictions of regular town life, and the chapters are paced with a page-turning sensitivity. One prominent atheist character is portrayed as the thinnest straw-man caricature of an unbeliever, but readers willing to overlook that flaw will find a surprisingly complex and heartwarming tale in the rest of the book.

A heartfelt and engaging Christian parable about the mechanisms of divine will.

GO IN JOY! AN ALPHABETICAL ADVENTURE

A RELATABLE BOOK OF ESSAYS, POEMS AND QUESTIONS TO IGNITE YOUR JOY

An often poignant, if somewhat overlong, exploration of authenticity and creative expression.

A collection of short stories, reflective thoughts, and poems examining what it means to live fully and consciously.

The writings in each of the 22 sections in Resor’s debut book correspond to a letter or several—A through Z—with its title and/or theme. For example, the chapter on the letter C contains “Cages To Recognize and Unlock,” which discusses how one constricts one’s feelings, needs, and desires; “Calisthenics for the Contents of our Craniums,” which spotlights ego and empathy; and “Callings From the Deep,” which focuses on knowing oneself well enough to identify and follow one’s purpose. Each essay plays with motifs of inner peace, contentment, originality, imagination, and healing. The mixture of Resor’s own intimate experiences with her poetry and individualized answers to profound questions makes for an engaging read. While the whole work is close to 300 pages, each chapter can be read as a short, stand-alone encounter with Resor’s warm storytelling. Her writing style is playful, provocative, and personable, by turns, and the anecdotes here signal the author’s clear zest for life. It creates a sense of fluidity that’s not often present in self-help works; the overall tone is reminiscent of a casual conversation with a trusted friend. That said, later chapters start to blur together a bit, as the theme doesn’t ever evolve very much past a basic, feel-good message. Resor’s words and ideas are valid and thoughtful, but that isn’t enough to sustain 22 separate installments that all reiterate the same fundamental concepts.

An often poignant, if somewhat overlong, exploration of authenticity and creative expression.
