This mirthful treat conveys the profound and loving connection between parent and child. A little girl pig decides that today is her mommy’s special day and brings an overflowing breakfast to her mother in bed. As she dashes off to make her mommy a card, readers see mother mopping up the spills of the meal. The wee piggy has a flurry of ideas, one of which is to pluck all of her mom’s daffodils. She plops the bouquet in a vase and finishes it with a toilet-paper bow. The child’s exuberance and the mother’s loving patience are palpable. The end result is applaudable as the piglet says, “Hold my hand, and close your eyes really tight, Mommy” and leads her mom to the wonderful ensemble of surprises she has created for her. With ’50s-period illustrations and colors so right they are like comfort food, this read is perfect for any day. Paired with Andreasen’s With a Little Help from Daddy (2003), this contributes splendidly to the family library. (Picture book. 2-5)
