The Reluctant Dragon meets Ella Enchanted in this lighthearted adventure debut. Perhaps if her mother hadn’t died in childbirth, her father weren’t so aloof and her godmother, Drusilla, hadn’t abandoned her as a baby, Princess Ivy would show more (or some) propriety. Now, on her 14th birthday, according to the Dragon Treaty, which is meant to continue the royal line and keep dragons from destroying Ardendale (by luring daring princes who would not otherwise travel to the meager kingdom), she will be locked in a tower guarded by a dragon until she is rescued. When she discovers that her would-be rescuer, Prince Romil, plans to destroy the royal family and the dragons after their marriage, Ivy elicits the help of Elridge, her meek guard dragon, to find Drusilla and thwart Romil’s plans. Their courageous quest and unlikely friendship takes them atop mountains filled with man- (and dragon-) eating trolls, through a haunted swamp and through the fairy realm’s perilous entry. Evenly paced with humor to match, this fractured fairy tale will delight tween readers. (Fantasy. 8-12)
