A quartet of interconnected tales starring a raccoon postal worker.
Wally is responsible for delivering mail across the titular forest, where he lives with best friend Bo, a white rabbit. Working together, they bring letters and packages to a variety of animals. An encounter with Mr. Sternbill, a grumpy storklike bird who resides in the hills high above the community, frustrates Bo, but Wally reminds Bo of one of his personal mottos: “To all you meet, be good and kind—you never know what’s on their mind.” He shares others as the narrative continues: “Patience is a virtue: A little waiting will not hurt you.” “Rain, sleet, snow or shine! Every house, every time!” These philosophies guide the first three chapters, which may be low on action but excel at quiet worldbuilding. A resolution of sorts comes when Wally’s hard work on a rainy day results in a cold. The forest neighbors surprise the ailing mail carrier, adding a new motto to his board—a reminder to take care of himself, as his work is vital. Fong’s depictions of cozy woodland settings filled with softly rounded, squat anthropomorphized animals are enchanting. Added features, such as a seek-and-find game and a brief drawing guide, enhance the story’s appeal; youngsters looking for a gentle read will be pleased with this whimsical graphic novel.
Delightfully adorable with a great message. Readers will eagerly await the next volume.
