Babies demonstrate simple actions in photos accompanied by one line of a couplet.
In six double-page spreads with a line of text on the left and stock photo on the right, these cherubs pat heads, clap, wiggle toes, touch noses, reach up, and crawl for a ball, all the while encouraging their young audience to do the same. “Show me your hands, then clap, clap, clap! / Wiggle, wiggle, wiggle all ten toes.” The repetition of words, mostly verbs, lends this book well to reading aloud and participation. Colorful stripes or polka dots with sparkly, tactile textures accompany the text pages. Refreshingly, more than half, or four out of seven, of the babes depicted look to be children of color, with almond-shaped eyes, dark skin, and/or kinky hair. The pages, which are thicker than most board-book titles, look as though they could stand up to robust play.
A demographically and developmentally appropriate offering.
