Hugger is an enormous Newfoundland, trained to search for and rescue people lost in wilderness areas, snowstorms, avalanches, or at sea. While many dogs are so used, according to Patent, ``Newfies' '' natural lifesaving instinct means they require little training. Appealing color photos show Hugger and other Newfies, puppy to adult, cuddling, playing, and in training; dogs are also seen in a helicopter, crossing a ravine in a rope sling, attempting a water rescue, and digging for avalanche victims. According to members of the ``Black Paws Search, Rescue & Avalanche Dogs'' club, Newfies make great family pets, but beware: They weigh up to 160 pounds, eat 20 pounds of food a week, and love to kiss their owners. Appealing. (Nonfiction. 8-11)
