A high-contrast wordless board book provides simple, graphic images of objects both common (apple, house) and un- (camel, giraffe, whale) set off in bold colors and white. The objects are embossed on the page, allowing tiny fingers to feel the objects’ outlines. While there’s something of a hodgepodge effect—why mix apples and rhinos?—the contrast will appeal to infants, and it’s the rare toybox that doesn’t have a few exotic animals in it. This effort is more successful than a companion volume, What Colors? (ISBN: 978-1-934706-76-3), which presents a variety of animals on an accordioned frieze, with their colors labeled on the opposite side. The principal is not bad, but the frieze construction will make it awkward for readers to make the connections. (Ages 0-6 mos.)
