This supplies an imaginative, adventurous life history for one of the most familiar and most phlegmatic of children's pets—the 5 & 10¢ store's hand-painted turtle. The height of this little one's ambitions was to leave the edge of her murky pond where her age mates seemed quite willing to stay. First she tried to be a land animal by getting fuzz and fur all over her shell, but she didn't fool a pack of baboons who furiously dropped her back in the drink. She almost settled down to being ordinary, but one day she was scooped up in a net, had a rosebud painted on her back and went to live as a housepet. Emberley's cool green and blue water world and his animals are handsomely stylized but static, except in the baboon scenes.
