In a departure from the picture story book age (see Mouse Manor and Red Head) the author sets down a period piece (about 1900) and comes up with a family fantasy that carries off the make believe with assurance. When fatherless Jane, Mark, Katherine and Martha, all ages, whose mother works on a newspaper, find an old coin, things begin to happen. Their wishes send them on adventures to such far strands as King Arthur's Court and the Sahara Desert and not only that, but the coin brings them a new father in the person of compatible Mr. Smith whom the children all learn to love in good time. Layer cake.
