Sullivan (Black Artists in Photography, 18401940, p. 974, etc.) pitches his book at those new to snowboarding, covering types of boards, boots, bindings, and appropriate clothing. He recommends a few lessons in basic technique, available at most ski areas, and goes on to outline the basics with the aid of instructional, full- color, sequential photographs. Directions are clearly stated and appear easy to follow, although the need for subtle weight shifts isn't entirely conveyed in the photos. He finishes with descriptions of some more advanced techniques, a primer on snow conditions, advice on riding ski lifts, and a page of safety tips. An informative and inviting introduction to the sport that is fast growing in popularity. (glossary) (Nonfiction. 10+)
