THE STARS RAIN DOWN

Book 1—Who Owns You?

by Glenn Thomas

An interplanetary law-enforcing android chases down a wanted fugitive in Thomas’ debut SF novel and series launch.

Catherine Mercer is born in a California lab in the early 23rd century. She’s the first synthetic agent for Interplanetary Security, the law enforcement branch of The Provenance, Earth’s world government. Not even two years into her job as an IPS agent, Catherine is already bored. Her latest assignment seems simple—she’s to interview the sole survivor of a civilian freighter attacked on planet Aranae. The victim is Rick McCabe, whose pregnant wife Sarah was taken when pirates stormed their ship. Rather than let Catherine handle the case, Rick flees the scene and goes after the people who have Sarah. Catherine receives the command from IPS is to capture Rick, a suspected human trafficker now on the lam. Catherine, who’s more skilled and intuitive than other androids, falls into unforeseen predicaments during her dogged pursuit. Thomas tackles some of the genre’s most recognizable themes, such as the question of what it means to be human. Catherine displays human traits like curiosity about her nature (“There were some characteristics that she had once believed were exclusive to humans, but now she had to reconsider”), and she’s unique; her ‘father’ Ian Mercer programs her with the option to deceive, which is illegal for androids. The most memorable scenes entail Catherine’s IPS training, as fellow recruits mock and bully her for not being what they consider to be a true woman (she’s not anatomically correct). The latter half delivers fast-paced action as Catherine, Rick, and Rick’s new hacker pal QR, who belongs to a humanoid species with “muted brownish green” skin, wind up in all sorts of trouble. This first series installment ends with a clear indication as to where the Catherine-centric series will go next.

An able, delightfully complex hero propels this exhilarating distant-future tale.
