HANNAH THE HIPPO'S NO MUD DAY

Like anxious parent Tabitha Twitchett, Hannah's mother hopes (vainly) that Hannah will keep her finery spotless till company arrives; unlike Tom Kitten, Hannah contrives to get clean again before she's caught—and then has the joy of having amusingly overdressed Aunt Lily ask to join her in ``a nice cool roll in the mud!'' Hiskey's longish text, suitable for young readers as well as preschoolers, is predictable but smoothly told; Schmidt's engaging illustrations, in a popular style, sport comically subtle facial expressions.
