Unstoppable force, meet not-so-immovable object.

Grouchy bulldog Elvis and zippy poodle mix Romeo are about as different as two pups can be. Depending on whom you ask, a visit to the dog park sounds either torturous or heavenly, but that’s nonetheless where our protagonists meet one sunny day. Energized by eternal and oblivious optimism, Romeo instantly identifies a scowling Elvis as his pal du jour, making cheerful conversation and attempting to connect over shared pastimes. Cloud-spotting doesn’t do the trick, nor do games of tag or hide-and-seek, but when an errant Frisbee is flung in the pair’s direction, Elvis’ true passion for play surfaces. Eager to introduce Romeo to the joys of fetch (and to jointly devise a recipe for the world’s tastiest sandwich), Elvis discovers that their differences may be more complementary than they are incompatible. And, disagreements aside, both concur—no force proves more powerful than a shared love of treats. Though this tale of unlikely friendship treads familiar territory, it’s a pleasant enough jaunt to the dog park with charming illustrations to match, introducing likable canine characters and setting the stage for future odd-couple hijinks.

A worthy selection for pet lovers and sandwich fans alike.
