I HAVE A DREAM

The Life and Words of Martin Luther King, Jr.

by Jim Haskins

Pub Date: Feb. 1st, 1993
ISBN: 1-56294-087-2
Publisher: Millbrook

Yet another King biography, this one lifted above the ordinary by the passion and dignity of King's own rhetoric—extensive quotations from books, speeches, and letters worked into Haskins's spare narrative of King's family history, life events, and beliefs. The b&w photos that occupy more than one-third of the book are carefully juxtaposed with the appropriate text; a number of their captions also contain quotes. Though many of the photos are familiar, the 8 1/2'' x 11'' format and the quality of paper and reproduction here give them renewed impact. Not a source for those wishing to delve into the complexities of events or character, but an excellent verbal and visual presentation of the essentials of King's life and times. A memoir by Rosa Parks serves as introduction. Chronology; bibliographies; sources of pictures and quotations; index. (Biography. 10+)
