‘TIL THE COWS COME HOME

In this literary version of “Joseph and his Overcoat” or “The Button,” a piece of flawless leather is used to make chaps, then a vest, a pair of gloves, a hat band, and finally a button. When the button is lost, it becomes the basis for the story the cowboy tells his daughter as the two of them bring the cows home. Seems the cowboy wore the hatband when he married Sally Mae and the button was on his pants when he held his baby girl for the first time. The details in the illustrations extend the sense of tranquility and gentle family relationships—strong muscular horses, gorgeous landscapes of the western countryside, loving family scenes, frisky small animals, and dancing neighbors.
