LIGHTS OUT!

Six young scouts at Camp Bader are having trouble with the dark of night. One by one, each scout envisions some horror or another after the lights are doused: a serpent, a vampire bat, a bulging eye in the ceiling. Time after time, Counselor Jim must leap from his bed to flip on the lights and calm the boys. Even flashlights fail to assuage the fears of the cabin's inmates, but the last page satisfyingly turns the whole scene on its head. Himmelman creates an impressive host of spooks and appealing little scouts; this is a well-handled, modest pleasure. (Picture book. 4- 8)
