WHAT DO YOU LOVE?

A pair of anthropomorphic pooches frolic through their day enumerating their favorite things. The book’s title poses the question that a puppy and his adoring mother answer in sing-song verse. Short rhymes encompass the many facets of childhood delights, from silly songs to cozy talks. “Jumping puddles / and Mommy’s cuddles, / big trees and rustling leaves, / read alouds / and sunset clouds. / What do you love?” Young readers will readily recognize a few of their own favorites, as London covers everything from rambunctious games of hide-and-seek to bedtime rituals. At the close, readers are encouraged to contribute their own individual likes to the list. Schimidt’s full-page watercolors complete the effect. The oversized typeface, set in Lemonade Regular, allows for only a few words on each page, focusing the reader’s eye on the generously colored illustrations. Warmly drawn scenes depict the happy canines engaged in the described activities and illuminate the loving bonds between mother and child. Preschoolers may even have a giggle over the pictures portraying the duo clad in human clothes, with furry tails peeping out the backs of their denim jeans.
