Francois was by nationality, French, and by species a fox. He was a perfectly ordinary fox, wicked, sly, and avaricious until one day in the mid-twelfth century he has a vision. Francois, dazzled by the pristine beauty of a church window conceives of sainthood and vows to achieve sanctity. This he does, with all the accompanying struggles between carnal and spiritual satisfaction in a story which is at once piquant and moving.
