Part two of this trilogy does not have the cohesiveness of the first and suffers as a consequence. Life has settled into a pattern for Maggie and her motley family on the farm. With the original characters as well as a wild variety of talking animals, it takes on the flavor of a hippie commune. But the unity is broken with the return of Maggie’s partner and their son. Almost immediately upon his return, Bernard launches a campaign to leave the safety of the farm and trek across the Himalayas. He’s searching for the mythical Yeti and the gene that is the evolutionary missing link. The family is divided, with some staying to keep the farm going and others following Bernard’s improbable adventure. Before they come together again, lives will be lost, long buried enmities will rise to the surface and missing worlds will be found. Unfortunately, this all seems to take place like pictures painted on water and with little involvement by the characters. Nothing is really resolved. Perhaps the last volume will answer all the unanswered questions. It will take a dogged effort, however, for the reader to make the effort to wade through more of the same. (Fantasy. 12-15)
