ROUNDUP AT THE PALACE

Zack’s helping his father take Buster, their prize bull, to the National Western Stock Show near Denver. It’s the first time at the show for bull and boy, and Zack comforts Buster as he loads him into the truck. Dad and Zack sing along to country tunes as they drive through a blizzard to the show, but Buster seems agitated. During a detour through downtown Denver, Buster breaks out and mistakes the wide doors of the Brown Palace Hotel for the wide doors of his barn. Once inside, he’s confused and angered by the slippery floors and screaming people; he corners young Alice, who helps her mother in the hotel shop. Zack rescues her and Buster, and they go to the stock show together. A steer did make a run through the Palace lobby in 1996, but those events only suggested this tale. The Daniels’ watercolor illustrations are the best feature here. The text is realistic but lacks the drive and individuality needed to make it a crowd pleaser. Still, this will make a serviceable read-aloud for older children. A good regional purchase or for large libraries serving rural communities. (Picture book. 5-8)
