Alexander's twist on the old bumpkin-on-the-town motif is to make his handsome and guileless hero a country cat, whose wizard master has consented to send him to Brightford in the form of a man. Consistently landing on his feet despite the rogues who are after his money and the joker who advises him to kiss pretty but proper young Mistress Gillian if he wants a meal at her inn, Lionel is befriended by a doctorus medicus who is equipped with a repertoire of garbled Latin and an Armamentarium of tricks. Lionel eventually goes through flame and high water and a night in jail in order to save Gillian from the clutches of greedy Mayor Pursewig; his love and concern for her make him a real man for good, and as Dr. Tudbelly says, "Optimus terminus! Everything's turned out splendidly." Vita brevis funibus.
