P.U. Zorilla needs a new home. “I am kind, hardworking, generally smell fine, and am good with children and animals. May I come to your town to live?” the skunk inquires of Mayor Tootlebee. The mayor embraces P.U. with open arms and finds him a job driving a school bus. All is well until the children argue, and the skunk’s tail begins to lift. “ . . . Please don’t upset P.U. Zorilla,” the mayor implores, but to no avail. Despite the mayor’s repeated warnings, P.U. is upset when he works at the pet store and then at the ball park. It looks like P.U.’s attempt at employment is all a foul-smelling mess, when the mayor gives him one more chance: P.U. can clean Mrs. Tootlebee’s store after it closes. P.U. is hard at work when thieves break in. Using his spray as a weapon, P.U. foils the robbery and finds his true calling. Kids will laugh out loud at P.U.’s pungent emissions and join in with the repeated refrain. Comical, stylized paint-and-collage illustrations accompany the clever text, resulting in a most malodorous treat. (Picture book. 3-7)
