A disgruntled tot throws the adults around her into an uproar until her sagacious older sister reveals the practical solution to this prickly situation. When Beth awakens in a cantankerous mood, everyone, from her parents to extended family, attempt to cheer her up with silly songs and games. Yet not even grandpa’s impromptu cow sock or Uncle Ben’s silly drawings can tickle this tiny tot’s fancy. Fitzpatrick keeps the text appropriately simple for the youngest audience. With each adult’s endeavor, Fitzpatrick repeats the refrain “Silly Auntie Bea,” etc. The surprise resolution of Beth’s bad mood will have readers giggling along with her. Fitzpatrick’s artwork consists of simple line drawings colored with richly hued gouache paints utilizing large vibrant blocks of color to attract the reader’s attention. Young readers will enjoy both the repetitious nature of the text and the toddler-friendly artwork. Fitzpatrick’s newest tale is just the thing to tease recalcitrant tots out of grumpy moods.
