Short stories focusing mainly on Marr’s previous novel series crowd out other interesting tales in this uneven collection.
Beginning with an intriguing vampire tale and an affecting love story involving seal-people ("selchies"), the author continues by using most of the book for a multi-chaptered novella plus more stories that deal directly with her earlier Wicked Lovely series but never provides any exposition for them. Instead, these stories, comprising about two-thirds of the book, demand knowledge of her already created faerie world. Absent that knowledge, the faerie stories, especially the novella, are virtually incomprehensible. Two or three have tenuous plot lines, but most appear to be filling in possible loose ends from the series. Other, much shorter stories provide better impact, especially “Flesh for Comfort,” a nicely creepy tale. However, one wonders why the standalone stories have been included here. Wouldn’t a final addition to the series and a separate short-story book have served readers better? Add to that the author’s fondness for italicizing emphatic statements and such eccentric sentences as, “The tangles of panic and fear and guilt hit Irial like an unwelcome banquet,” and readers will understand another of her statements: “Excess is normalcy.”

A thrilling, climactic storm with an abrupt conclusion.
In this much-anticipated trilogy closer following 2019’s Children of Virtue and Vengeance, an enemy from a land across the sea carries out conquests to fulfill a prophecy that threatens the entire world.
The war between the maji and the crown of Orïsha ends when the Skulls, a tribe of masked, pale-skinned invaders, interrupt the pivotal battle, abducting Zélie, Tzain, Amari, Inan, and dozens of maji from their homeland. Caged on a ship and cut off from their magic, they have no choice but to set aside their bitterness and distrust to fight for their freedom. Ruthless and empowered by the volatile magic of bloodmetal weapons, the Skulls hunt for Zélie, “a girl with the blood of the sun,” at the command of their king, Baldyr, who prepares for his ascension to godhood during the Blood Moon. As much as she longs to return home, visions and an intertwined fate pull Zélie, along with her companions, to the land of New Gaīa in search of a girl with russet-brown skin and eyes that glitter like diamonds. United goals, fresh conflict, and impending doom provide invigorating gusts of momentum that push the story out of the doldrums of the previous book. On its own, this installment is a suspenseful and compelling expansion of the world, but as a series finale, the conflict seems disconnected from the first two books, and the resolution feels rushed.

A heavy read about the harsh realities of tragedy and their effects on those left behind.
In this companion novel to 2013’s If He Had Been With Me, three characters tell their sides of the story.
Finn’s narrative starts three days before his death. He explores the progress of his unrequited love for best friend Autumn up until the day he finally expresses his feelings. Finn’s story ends with his tragic death, which leaves his close friends devastated, unmoored, and uncertain how to go on. Jack’s section follows, offering a heartbreaking look at what it’s like to live with grief. Jack works to overcome the anger he feels toward Sylvie, the girlfriend Finn was breaking up with when he died, and Autumn, the girl he was preparing to build his life around (but whom Jack believed wasn’t good enough for Finn). But when Jack sees how Autumn’s grief matches his own, it changes their understanding of one another. Autumn’s chapters trace her life without Finn as readers follow her struggles with mental health and balancing love and loss. Those who have read the earlier book will better connect with and feel for these characters, particularly since they’ll have a more well-rounded impression of Finn. The pain and anger is well written, and the novel highlights the most troublesome aspects of young adulthood: overconfidence sprinkled with heavy insecurities, fear-fueled decisions, bad communication, and brash judgments.
