A gimmicky, overbusy book with a handle and a Velcroed-shut cover provides limping verse to accompany the packing of a small child’s backpack. Each spread features one lift-out piece that fits into the background, puzzle-wise. Labeled for children 3-5, this effort fails all audiences—the toddlers it will attract but mystify (and perhaps endanger with small parts) and the preschoolers who need and deserve more complexity in their books.
