In her first solo effort, an accomplished illustrator (Stolz's fantasies; science books about animals) describes a mouse who, wanting to go to sea, considers many progressively smaller vessels (ship, ferry, rowboat, etc.) before imaginatively constructing her own boat of natural materials. The soft, meticulously detailed color-pencil illustrations in this 7-inch square book are charming—and also accurate to the many species portrayed; the quiet text serves nicely to tie them together. Unusually appealing. (Picture book. 4-8)
