After his pup chews his mother's shoe and she threatens, ``If you can't train him better, we're getting rid of him,'' a boy imagines where he and the dog could go—the beach (``no place to sleep''), an all-night truck stop (``what if they don't allow dogs?''), the loft in a friend's garage (but the dog can't climb ladders). Finally, it occurs to him that he might train the dog, beginning with a firm proscription against chewing shoes. The fantasies aren't especially imaginative, but they're believable brainstorming by a kid who's venting his frustration before confronting his problem in a more constructive manner. The author's colorful, realistic illustrations make a fine complement. (Picture book. 4-8)
