It flew through the galaxy and landed one quiet night right in the Gaws' yard—a fallen star! News travels fast in rural Michigan, and hardly have the dust and confusion settled before everyone in Union City—including the Coldwater Chauauqua Circus, The Union City Ladies' Lyceum and Dr. Trotter's Medicine Wagon—is on the way to Mudsock Meadow. It's an instant carnival at the Gaws, with meteoric events right and left, a marching band, a balloon ride and crowds of people marvelling at the large, woolly-looking meteorite. Some folks even say that they feel different after touching it. Colorful illustrations amplify all this commotion, with plenty of wide-eyed people and livestock packed into each scene, pointing, gesticulating, dancing and gabbling away. Does the incident change anyone's life? Probably not, concludes the narrator, but the meteorite, and the story, have been in the family ever since. An affectionate poke at small-town life.
