LONE BULL'S HORSE RAID

Lone Bull, a fourteen year-old Oglala Sioux and "a typical boy from any Plains Indian tribe about one hundred years ago," is a composite-of several young warriors who later recorded their memories of the horse raiding parties — this one directed against a Crow tribe — which were undertaken as a point of honor and "the traditional way for a young man to gain a good reputation in the tribe." The account of his first horse stealing expedition is illustrated in the same handsome style (the pages swarming with herds of earth-toned horses and their bonneted, armed riders) as the Gobles' reconstructions of Custer's Last Battle (KR, 1970) and The Fetterman Fight (KR, 1972), although, without the tragic historical dimension of those other two battles, the Indians' fierce bravery seems less exemplary and the casualties more gratuitous.
