This abecedarian picture book teaches children about desirable personal qualities.

To better learn the alphabet, this ABC book depicts each letter in colorful patterns that stand out from the rest of the text, using both upper- and lowercase forms (for example, “P is for patient”). The letters are accompanied by rhyming couplets; generally, the first line gives the virtue’s meaning and the second shows the concept in action, with an illustrated example. To take one entry, “K is for kind” explains that “Having a kind heart means showing you care,” such as “offering help to your friends everywhere.” In the image, a boy shares his umbrella with a girl. Some entries describe traditionally moralistic virtues, like “D is for dutiful,” but most concern congenial qualities, such as being “friendly,” “imaginative,” or “understanding.” Kumari and Garg previously collaborated on My Raksha Bandhan (2020). The authors’ rhyming verse scans well and nicely condenses sometimes-complicated concepts: “A person who’s zealous supports a good cause. / Like helping the world to protect nature’s laws.” Ghosh provides jaunty digital illustrations of cute, diverse characters accompanied by whimsical details.

An encouraging tone and cheerful images deftly convey a didactic message.
