A journey into the world of magical spells came about by way of the Big Green Book discovered by Jack on a solitary trip to the attic of his Aunt and Uncle's home. Transformed into a ragged but powerful old man, Jack works his power on his relatives, outwitting them in cards, and winning control of the whole house. He also causes a strange and funny rabbit-phobia in the dog, and in the end, chooses a more realistic magical spell, insuring himself of a permanent place at the top of his class. The whole thing is a package of nonsense, but there is definite fantasy value here for power-hungry young imaginations. Maurice Sendak's delightful pictures add a winning note of gaiety.
