A young Black child is affirmed as they learn about the achievements of Black figures through history.
A cool palette of blues and purples transitions into a bright depiction of verdant land as a baby is born, surrounded by loving parents and extended family who uplift their newest member. The energetic second-person narration encourages the child and readers to raise their voices as figures such as civil rights icon and congressman John Lewis and Kenyan environmental activist Wangari Muta Maathai are spotlighted. References to God and religion are woven into the narrative; surrounded by images of inventors, including Sarah Boone, the child is encouraged to use “the talent God has given you” and reminded that “you come from God.” The author admirably describes the work of world leaders, scientists, mathematicians, and many more figures across the diaspora as well as how their accomplishments might apply to the child’s future. Bright, vibrant colors bring the active illustrations to life as they honor ancestors who have made significant contributions to the world. Bold phrases appear throughout, encouraging young readers to “WALK TALL” or “SPEAK PEACE AND SEEK JUSTICE.” The historical figures are named on the page they appear on, and the book concludes with further information on these individuals, each accompanied by a joyful portrait.
