Home-schoolers will love this—for a minute.

Activities on each page increase in complexity as the pages turn. Each page provides space to trace and then copy a numeral, the corresponding number word, and a few simple workbook activities related to that number. The first pages are devoted to numbers one through five, followed by zero. After four pages of review activities, numbers six through 10 are introduced on double-page spreads. Pre-readers will need help to understand the directions and may not be ready for writing activities, and the board-book format may turn off children old enough to do the activities independently. Most children will memorize the answers after just a few times using the book. With only minimal use, the wipe-off surfaces will begin to show wear. A die-cut slot at the top of all but the last page provides space to clip a special pen with ink that can be wiped clean after use. Whether children will confine their writing practice to this pen or these pages is questionable. With some effort, crayons, ballpoint pens, and highlighters will wipe off, but they leave impressions and a shadow behind.

A tablet of primary-ruled paper with a variety of writing implements will do the same job while also encouraging creativity.
