Little Polly is coming for the night, and (she confides by phone) she's hoping Grandpa Bud will bake her favorite cake. Another call from Polly: ``Henry'' is coming, too, if he may; he likes Jell-O and ice cream. The joke is that Polly, on the text page, is shown holding Henry, who's a toy bear, while, as shown opposite, Grandpa imagines a hungry boy who will also have to share Polly's bed. Polly calls again (Rosie would like banana sandwiches) and again (George's favorite is hot dogs); getting a bit bothered now, Grandpa scurries around the kitchen while visualizing a bed ever more crowded with the children he thinks Polly has described—until she turns up with a basket of stuffed animals. Accommodating Grandpa Bud is an old sweetheart; and kids will love figuring out what's going on before he does. The engaging cartoon-style illustrations are just right. (Picture book. 3-7)
