SOMETHING TO REMEMBER ME BY

A sentimental, intergenerational story that may evoke both memories and tears. Bosak recounts childhood visits to her warm and loving grandmother, who lives in a house ``happy on sunny days and cozy on rainy days'' where ``it was always fun.'' This grandmother lets her bake cookies, eat snacks any time she wants, and select what she wants for dinner; this grandmother always has time to play cards, let a little girl garden, snuggle and watch TV, share a hug, and listen. At the end of some visits the grandmother gives the child a gift, ``something to remember me by.'' The girl grows up, the grandmother moves from her house, and dies. The adult granddaughter sorts the contents of a cedar chest, reflects on treasured times, and looks at herself in the mirror, where she sees her grandmother's smile. The illustrations, with their rich golden tones, snug rooms, and smiling grandmother convey the same warm and loving message as the text. Extremely sweet, and very adult, but with appeal.
