The Grimm tale of Jorinda's enchantment and Joringel's devotion, tenderly and dramatically pictured by Adrienne Adams (1968), is strung out into a series of incidents in the vignettes which illustrate this small (4 3/4 x 6 3/4) volume—and which, moreover, give little scope for Margot Tomes' spirited drawing or sense of fun. Neither is Wanda Gag's longer version of the story (from More Tales from Grimm) significantly richer than Elizabeth Shub's crisp translation for the Adams volume. At the picture-book level, it's Adams and Shub all the way; this is pleasant to hold in the hand—but, even so, the pictures don't bear close or repeated scrutiny.
