This novella originally appeared in 1978, as one of the contributions to Millennial Women, an anthology edited by Virginia Kidd. From the May 1, 1978 Kirkus review: "'The Eye of the Heron'. . . is set on a planet peopled by two separate groups of Terran undesirables: transplanted criminals and exiled pacifists; their heirs have reached the moment of showdown about future courses of development. With its overkill of earnest understatement, it is nearly a parody of this writer's best work." (Inflationary note: the Kidd anthology, with the Le Guin as one of a half-dozen selections, cost $3.00 less than this Le Guin-alone reprint four years later.)
