Taylor Jenkins Reid’s Atmosphere is headed to the big screen, Variety reports.
Reid’s novel, scheduled for release next month by Ballantine, follows Joan Goodwin, a physics and astronomy professor in 1980 Houston who trains with NASA to be an astronaut and befriends the other members of her cohort before a horrible tragedy strikes. In a starred review, a critic for Kirkus wrote, “a heart-pounding race against the clock combined with a love story adds up to a novel that’s impossible to put down.”
The film adaptation will be written and directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck; the two previously collaborated on films including It’s Kind of a Funny Story, Captain Marvel, and Freaky Tales. Reid, Boden, and Fleck are among the film’s producers.
Reid’s books are hot properties in Hollywood. Her novel Daisy Jones & the Six was adapted into a hit miniseries starring Riley Keough, and her book One True Loves formed the basis of a film with Phillipa Soo and Simu Liu.
Maggie Betts is directing a film adaptation of Reid’s The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo, while Serena Williams is executive producing a Netflix series based on Reid’s Carrie Soto Is Back.
Matt Levin, the president of live action film for Laika, which is developing the Atmosphere adaptation, said, “Taylor Jenkins Reid always captivates us with rich, emotionally complex characters and she is in peak form with Atmosphere. There are no better filmmakers to adapt Taylor’s story for the screen than Ryan and Anna, who throughout their amazing careers have crafted deeply human stories set against canvases of stunning cinematic spectacle.”
