Bill Belichick has criticized CBS after an interview he did on the network raised eyebrows across the world of sports.
Belichick, the head football coach at the University of North Carolina and former New England Patriots head coach, appeared on CBS Sunday Morning last weekend in an interview tied to his new book, The Art of Winning: Lessons From My Life in Football, scheduled for release next Tuesday by Avid Reader Press, a division of Simon & Schuster.
CBS Sunday Morning co-host Tony Dokoupil asked Belichick about his football career and his book before asking the coach, 73, how he met his girlfriend, Jordon Hudson, 24.
Before Belichick could answer, Hudson, who was sitting in the same room, interjected, “We’re not talking about this.” The clip went viral shortly thereafter.
In a statement issued via the University of North Carolina, Belichick wrote, “Prior to this interview, I clearly communicated with my publicist at Simon & Schuster that any promotional interviews I participated in would agree to focus solely on the contents of the book. Unfortunately, that expectation was not honored during the interview.”
CBS responded with a statement of its own, saying, “When we agreed to speak with Mr. Belichick, it was for a wide-ranging interview. There were no preconditions or limitations to this conversation. This was confirmed repeatedly with his publisher before the interview took place and after it was completed.”
