Raina Telgemeier, Kwame Alexander, and Kadir Nelson are among the winners of this year’s Children’s and Teen Choice Book Awards, Publishers Weekly reports.
Every Child a Reader and the Children’s Book Council announced the winners and honorees for the prizes, which were launched in 2008 and are voted on each year by children and teenagers.
Telgemeier took home the Fifth–Sixth Grade Book of the Year award for Guts, about a young girl dealing with anxiety disorder. Pandora’s Legacy by Bones Leopard, illustrated by Kelly Matthews and Nichole Matthews, was the honoree in the category.
In the Third–Fourth Grade category, author Alexander and illustrator Nelson won for The Undefeated, a long poem about the experiences of notable Black Americans. Ted Kooser and illustrator Daniel Duncan were named the runners-up for Mr. Posey’s New Glasses.
Author Jory John and illustrator Pete Oswald won in the Kindergarten–Second Grade category for The Good Egg, with Stephen Savage’s The Babysitter From Another Planet coming in second place.
The Teen Choice Book Award went to Jen Calonita for her fairy-tale-themed novel Mirror, Mirror: A Twisted Tale. Renée Watson and Ellen Hagan’s Watch Us Rise was named the honoree.
Past winners of the Children’s and Teen Choice Book Awards include Mo Willems, Rick Riordan, Leigh Bardugo, and Jen Wang.
