Darren Star will bring Elaine Goldsmith-Thomas’ forthcoming novel, Climbing in Heels, to the small screen, Deadline reports. Star and Goldsmith-Thomas will serve as co-writers and executive producers on the Universal Television series.

The debut novel by Elaine Goldsmith-Thomas, best known as an executive producer on series including Shades of Blue and World of Dance, is set for publication by St. Martin’s Press on April 29, 2025. The book will follow three women working at a talent agency in 1980s Hollywood.

Star is the creator of some of television’s most iconic series, including Beverly Hills, 90210, Melrose Place, Sex and the City, and Emily in Paris. He is currently producing a biopic about the singer and antigay activist Anita Bryant.

Star called Climbing in Heels “the ballsy and bawdy love child of Mad Men and Sex and the City,” adding, “I can’t wait for audiences everywhere to meet this indomitable ensemble of female characters who broke all the rules to make their own.”

Goldsmith-Thomas told Deadline, “I am thrilled to be partnering with Darren Star and Universal Television to bring life to these complicated, colorful women who refused to be sidelined or silenced.”

She also shared news of the planned adaptation on Instagram, writing, “So excited to share this big news!!!!! Coming in 2025…Here’s to the climb and the climbers!”
