Drew Daywalt and Oliver Jeffers are bringing the crayons back for another adventure.
Philomel Books will publish The Day the Crayons Made Friends, written by Daywalt and illustrated by Jeffers, next year, the press announced in a news release. The book will be the latest installment in the series of children’s books that kicked off in 2013 with The Day the Crayons Quit, about a boy who is surprised to find that his dissatisfied art supplies have decided to go on strike.
Several books featuring the crayons followed, including The Day the Crayons Came Home, The Crayons Go Back to School, and The Crayons Give Thanks.
In the new book, the boy’s crayons decide that they need new friends and explore his room, where they meet toys including a headless doll and a teddy bear.
In a statement, Daywalt said, “The Day the Crayons Made Friends is a peek into the toy chest of my childhood heart, and I think when readers look inside, they’ll see that all of our childhood hearts are very much the same.”
Jeffers added, “We all need to make friends, and it seems the colorful sticks of wax in our kids’ art boxes are no exception. Personally, I wish I’d got an invite to the dinner party they all threw.”
The Day the Crayons Made Friends is scheduled for publication on June 3, 2025.
