The upcoming HBO series adaptation of J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter books has found its three leads.

The series will star Dominic McLaughlin as Harry Potter, Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger, and Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley, Warner Bros. Discovery, the owner of HBO, announced in a news release. All three actors are newcomers.

Rowling’s bestselling seven-book series of children’s fantasy novels launched in 1997 with Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone and concluded in 2007 with Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. The novels follow Harry, a boy wizard, and his friends as they navigate life at the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.

The novels were adapted into a series of eight films, starring Daniel Radcliffe as Harry, Emma Watson as Hermione, and Rupert Grint as Ron; all were box-office hits.

In 2023, Warner Bros. Discovery announced it would adapt the novels as a series to run on its streaming service Max, now called HBO Max. The company began announcing cast members this year, with John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore, Nick Frost as Rubeus Hagrid, Janet McTeer as Minerva McGonagall, and Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape.

Francesca Gardiner and Mark Mylod, two of the series’ executive producers, said in a statement, “After an extraordinary search led by casting directors Lucy Bevan and Emily Brockmann, we are delighted to announce we have found our Harry, Hermione, and Ron. The talent of these three unique actors is wonderful to behold, and we cannot wait for the world to witness their magic together onscreen. We would like to thank all the tens of thousands of children who auditioned. It’s been a real pleasure to discover the plethora of young talent out there.”
